I recently learned of the existence of this bank from Vivian Wisham, on my Vanishing Georgia Facebook group. She also told me of the house next door. I spoke with an older gentleman while photographing it who noted it was the Bank of Girard (he wasn’t positive about the name) and probably built in the 1910s. After it failed in 1927, it became the Girard Post Office and served that function for many years. He also stated that he had a photograph of his father in front of the post office circa 1934. He was hopeful that it will be saved. The old bank vault remains inside.
I’ve never been to Girard, but now I want to visit. What a shame this beauty can’t be restored for something! Brian, your photographs are soooo important. Thank you!
Sorry for previous email, meant to forward picture.
This building kind of looks like the one in Alabama you could have seen from the train if you had been on the right ( which would have been the left) side— the Bank of Boligee.

Brian, I note your interest in banks and thought immediately of William Rawlings wonderful book A Killing on Ring Jaw Bluff-which sounds like a novel but is a very insightful study of the recession after World War and the inflation that destroyed hundreds of small town banks in Georgia-including my grandfather’s in Gough we have talked about.
