
These large roadside signs are landmarks along the Douglas Highway (US 221) near the Roper community.

“Witness” signs like these were once common in the rural South, but much less so today.

It was such a phenomenon at one time that there’s a book about it called With Signs Following: Photographs from the Southern Religious Roadside, by photographer Joe York.

These examples are most likely the work of one person who uses them as a way of witnessing his faith.

Whoever is responsible for them keeps the paint freshened up, as they fade from time to time. And though the message remains the same, new signs are added occasionally.
