Morganton, Georgia

Morganton was established circa 1853 and became the seat of the newly established Fannin County in 1854; the first courthouse was built here in 1855. When Blue Ridge was established at the terminus of the Marietta & North Georgia Railroad in 1887, it became increasingly impractical for lawyers and judges to travel to the courthouse in Morganton. The county seat was moved to Blue Ridge in 1895.

Winged Gable Cottage, Morganton

The cedar in front of this great little house is so big that I had to get a shot from the side.

Saddlebag Farmhouse, Morganton

This is an unusual version of the saddlebag vernacular farmhouse type, with a taller roof and higher chimney than most versions I’m familiar with in South Georgia. It’s a great survivor of what was once probably a common form.

Ross House, Morganton

Patty Davenport writes: A Mrs. Ross lived here. She had been a school teacher in the area for many years. Her daughter and son-in-law were both artists and were among the original group to eventually start the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association now housed in the historic courthouse in Blue Ridge.

Cochran’s Auto Parts & Service Station, Morganton

I don’t find too many gas stations like this any more. This is so authentic it could be a movie set.

The best I can tell is that it was known as Cochran’s Auto Parts & Service Station.
