Smitty’s Grocery, Marlow

Smitty’s Grocery has been an Effingham County landmark since the 1960s, but the structure was originally one of two wings of the late-19th-century Richard Cuyler house. In 1947 both wings were relocated to nearby sites for use as rental properties. Smitty and Patrice Johnson began operating the store in the 1960s. The store has been a set location in several Hollywood productions, including: Now and Then (1995); Wild America (1997); and Claudine’s Return (1997).

This exceptional Italianate home was built by Edward McIntyre, who was one of the early settlers of the Marlow community. The Maner family have owned and maintained it for many years.

T. J. Maner’s Radio & TV Service, 1920s, Marlow

Thanks to Marvin Maner for the identification. This was his grandfather’s shop and is still owned by his family. Before the disposable culture we’re accustomed to today was a thing, radio an television repairman did good business fixing those old devices. The building dates to the 1920s, and obviously, that predates the advent of television.

First Baptist Church, Marlow

Methodist Church, 1905, Marlow

The South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church wrote: In 1884, Mr. Edward J. Purse deeded to the trustees one acre of land in the village of Marlow to be used as a place of worship for the MECS (Methodist Episcopal Church, South). However, it wasn’t until 1905, that Marlow was organized and the present sanctuary built using timber donated by the Presbyterians living in the area.  Known charter members were Mr. and Mrs. B. N. Shearouse, Mr. and Mrs. Dugger and A. J. Shearouse and family.  Among the first to join the church were O. Newton Mingledorff, Jr., and Mildred Shearouse in 1907. It’s still active as a United Methodist Church.
