Corn Crib, Washington County

Anne Chamlee made this photograph just south of Oconee in March 1991. She shares my fascination with old log structures.

Warehouse, Oconee

Georgian Cottage, Oconee

This house was likely built in the 1870s or 1880s, when this form of Georgian Cottage was most popular.

Oconee, Georgia

Oconee is an old town of Washington County. Originally designated Station No. 14 when the Central of Georgia Railway laid tracks in the area, it was renamed for the nearby Oconee River when the post office opened in 1842.

Curry’s, Oconee

Julie writes: I am a Curry and my Father and his Brother Ran this store. The names of the brothers were Bernard Curry and Curtis Curry. The building is now being restored. It still belongs to the Curry family. Recently we went in the attic to remove an old trunk. It was so very neat. It is so sad that nothing now is left of Oconee except for a few old houses.

General Store, Oconee

I originally identified this as the LeConte Merchandise Company, but I believe that may be incorrect.

That name is stamped on the panels on the door, but those could just be salvaged from old shipping crates. I will update if learn more.
