This little red store is quite a landmark in Madison County and I was determined to photograph it. I came to know of it through the photographs of my friend, Dagmar Nelson. She’s shot it many times over the years and if you’re interested in Madison County, you’ll enjoy here images.
Though the house has been stabilized, I believe this landmark of the crossroads to be in its original location. Deb Comer’s comment seems to confirm: My grandparents lived in Comer on a farm and we used to go to Gholston Stand on hot summer days to get Cokes or ice creams. There were two elderly farmers who lived in that house who used to sit on the porch in rocking chairs and wave to everyone who drove by. I always found it very sweet, but somehow sad too.
