Central Hallway House, Jewell

The Victorian porch posts and balustrade are later additions to the house, which appears to be of antebellum construction.

Rock Mills United Methodist Church, 1840, Jewell

This lovingly restored antebellum church was spared during Sherman’s March to the Sea thanks to the Masonic affiliation of Daniel Ashley Jewell. Moved from nearby Rock Mill Plantation in 1894, it’s an integral part of Jewell today. Jewell is one of numerous Georgia communities whose town limits fall within more than one county.

Jewell Baptist Church, 1870

Daniel Ashley Jewell, who made a fortune with his prosperous cotton mill on the Ogeechee River beginning in 1857, funded the building of this beautiful church. It was originally known as the Missionary Baptist Church of Christ at Jewell.

Family Reunion, Jewell

Nothing says “small town America” better than a family reunion; I spoke with some of the attendees while photographing the beautiful old churches of Jewell, on the Hancock County side.

Roger Cason House, Circa 1868, Jewell

The house pictured here, like most I’ve documented in the community, is located on the Warren County side of the Ogeechee River; part of historic Jewell is located in Hancock County, as well.

As evidenced by the accomplished architectural styles present in the area, it was much more prosperous in its early history.
