you make me home sick for South Georgia… I grew up in Dublin, Swainsboro and Tifton. All areas have these dunes.. I too grew up walking the fields, river banks and dirt roads looling for native artifacts. Robbie Sauls

Growing up in South Georgia, I remember seeing similar sand dunes in several regional counties. Jeff Davis, Telfair, and Coffee have some. I alway thought them beautiful and they have a interesting history of formation. They are reminants of the shores of an ancient sea that once covered the Southeast up to the current Fall Line that runs from Augusta, Macon, to Columbus, Georgia.
As a barefoot kid, I loved to cross them looking for Native American artifacts and fossils. One had to be careful not to tread on a Diamond Back Rattler or sharp cactus thorns. In my day, the trademark of these dunes was the Gopher T. The dunes often supported sparsley growing wiregrass, cactus, Turkey Oaks(Scrub Oak), and Rattle Boxes. The Long Leaf Pine thrived there as well. I Always hated to see the destruction done to these dunes by those who wanted the sand and dug into them removing truck loads.
