Mrs. Rogers Restaurant, Claxton

Sign for Mrs. Rogers Restaurant displaying bright orange lettering on a white and green background, with an additional sign advertising Claxton Fruit Cake.

I’m not sure when they opened, but this has been a Claxton landmark for at least 50 years. I’ve eaten the buffet here and it’s just good old Southern cooking.

Derrell Lewis writes: “Mrs. Rogers Restaurant opened in 1957 if I’m not mistaken because my Grandmother, Mrs. Sarah Lewis, was the first waitress that JR Rogers hired and I believe she told me that the first day they opened that she and JR Rogers walked in at the same time, at 5:00 in the morning…I think she told me that was in 1957…”

Update: As of 2018, the restaurant is closed.

Mrs. Rogers Restaurant opened in 1957 if I’m not mistaken because my Grandmother Mrs. Sarah Lewis was the first waitress that JR Rogers hired and I believe she told me that the first day they opened that she and JR Rogers walked in at the same time at 5:00 in the morning on the first day that he opened the restaurant and I think she told me that was in 1957, and she actually told me the month and date but I can’t remember that.

Wow! that sign brings back a lot of memories. I had a car wreck right outside that restaurant and subsequently ate many a fantastic meal there. Chicken and rice with gravy, biscuits and some of the nicest people in the world. It’s been MANY years since I lived in Claxton but, this still brings back a lot of good times to my memory.

While on a roadtrip from California, I stopped in a neighboring town and asked where I could scramble up some good biscuits and gravy. The answer was “Mrs. Rogers in Claxton.” Well, I got more than good food. I met at least three wonderful customers and staff and EVERYONE treated me with true Southern hospitality. Thank y’all. I’ll be back.

This restaurant has been part of Claxton’s landscape as long as I can remember (since the 50’s ) and is now owned by a cousin of mine. Great chicken!
