The closure of this post office is still one of the most asinine things I’ve ever seen. My father and I often drove ten miles from Fitzgerald just to utilize its services. The staff were always friendly and they had the time to visit and talk, just what you’d expect in a country post office. They even had a small lending library for folks in Irwinville. That a community landmark like this could just be closed with no input from local elected officials remains a mystery to me.

A part of our vanishing America. One day we are going to wake up and realize we have lost the things that have made us who we are. We don”t have time anymore to appreciate and enjoy the things that have made us strong in the past. Things like taking time to visit, telling stories, and truly exhibiting a caring attitude for those around us. Sad.
Thanks, Brian. We need all the support and publicity we can get about the Irwinville Post Office.
When I found this site, I looked at pictures for over an hour-most of them in Irwin County. Thank you so much for trying to preserve
images of “the good ole days”. I moved to Irwinville in 1979 and
decided to never leave the country life. We live close to the park and family land joins it.
Just wanted you to know my husband and I really appreciate your work.
Thank you, Brenda, for taking time out of your day to look at the photographs. Irwinville is one of my favorite places in the world!
Thanks, again, Brian for bringing this to our attention; like you, I’m afraid that saying nothing will produce a very negative result. It reminds me of how citizens were sold on school consolidation – to better education, when the era of smaller schools in the county was actually better for true education, discipline, class size, team participation and more. Will send a letter to Macon, as you suggested.
Thank you, Tom, for getting involved. Certainly the example of school consolidation comes to mind…it seems to have been all downhill from there.
Thanks for your support! One of my favorite sayings is:
“Bigger ain’t always better”.
I use rural Post Offices driving farther than their city counterparts- always like the service better, more personal. I lived in Moultrie about 2 miles from their PO, but had my box number in Funston and drove 6 extra miles. It is a shame the govrnment may cut these back.
Thanks for the comment, John! I wholeheartedly agree!
