Cheri Smith Paradise, whose husband’s family owns this property and the adjoining site of the former Bacon’s Motel writes: This building was a store that sold bbq and beer. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s it was called the Plains Country Club.
Update: As of 2016, this structure is no longer standing.

As one of the official White House photographers during the Carter administration I spent quite a bit of time in Plains. During one visit I was asked by fellow staffers if I could make the ‘lunch run’ to pick up some BBQ. I was directed to the “Plains Country Club.” I found it easy enough, but at first look it didn’t look like a BBQ joint. Well, it was, and the food was terrific. I got a container of Brunswick Stew that was off the charts! I’m sorry to hear that the only country club I would have ever joined had been torn down a few years ago.
I passed by this place 100’s of times and told myself to stop and take pictures. Never did and sure enough, I regret it.
It also was a bar for several years that I spent a lot of money in also lost many pool games! It was a big biker hang-out back in the day!
I think you missed quoted me at the top lead in line. You have me saying this is my family’s property and I said “my husband’s family owns this property.” Cheri Smith Paradise
Cheri, Forgive the misquote. I’ve been re-editing much of the website and may have been typing that really late. I think I fixed it. I decided to separate the two places since, as you noted, they weren’t related. I do appreciate your comments!
This is not Bacon’s Motel. My husband’s family owns that property and Bacon’s Motel was a motor court and all the bungalows have been torn down. This buidling was a store that sold bbq and beer. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s it was called the Plains Country club.
Thank you so much, Cheri. I wondered where the motel rooms were! It makes sense that just the old sign survived, as so many of these places were torn down by the 1980s. I will add this information…
I passed by the old building post today. I was surprised to see that the old sign that survived the demolishing was freshly painted and detailed. WHAT GIVES????
I’ve photoed this very house ,cool !
