B J Confectionary, 1955, Sapelo Island

An abandoned building labeled 'BJ Confectionary,' surrounded by overgrown grass and trees draped with Spanish moss.

B J Confectionary served as the island’s de facto grocery store for many years. It was owned by the late Bennie (1906-1987) & Viola P. Johnson (1919-2001); Mrs. Johnson was known for her beautiful grapevine wreaths, which she made regularly and sold to tourists. The structure has recently been restored.
