Tanner Cemetery, Ben Hill County

This historic African-American cemetery is located in northern Ben Hill County. I don’t believe it was associated with a particular congregation but was rather a community burial ground.

Julia D. Taylor (1888 – 1963)

There is a simple beauty to this place, surrounded by farmland.

Nadine McElhaney; Walter James Henry (US Navy); Lizzie Pugh; & others

Though it might appear wild in these photos due to the high grasses, it is actually well-maintained.

Alberta Coffee McElhaney (8 March 1904 – 17 December 1988)

The vast majority of the memorials are concrete slabs with stenciled identifications.

Joe Taylor (1878 – 1964); Willie Ford (1918? – 1975)

The McElhaney side of my family’s cemetery, though my grandparents (Swain) and most recently my uncle are buried in Evergreen. My grandmother’s maiden name is McElhaney and Lizzie Pugh was her sister and Walter was Ms Pugh’s son, my second cousin.
