Sheriff Earl Hamrick Monument, Jeffersonville

A monument on the courthouse lawn honors Earl Hamrick, one of the longest-serving sheriffs in U. S. History. It reads, simply: W. Earl Hamrick, Sr., Sheriff, Twiggs County, January 1, 1941 – December 31, 1988, “A Living Legend”

As a Twiggs County native, I remember Mr. Earl with grest respect. My oldest brother who just passed Christmas Day 2022, told a funny story about Mr. Earl letting my brother and a friend ride with him “way back when” (late 40’s or early 50’s) on a chase that scared the pants off of them.

Remember this name well growing up in adjoining Wilkinson county with a mama who grew up kinda on the Twiggs side of the county she was familiar with his name even perhaps before he became sheriff.
