New Hope Baptist Church, Sibley

This congregation was established in 1871 and appears to be all that remains of the enigmatic settlement of Sibley, located just south of present-day Arabi off Georgia Highway 41. It probably grew around the railroad line that passed nearby and was never much more than a siding and perhaps a large plantation or working farm. I’d appreciate any information about Sibley.

My parents built a house on Highway 41 in Sibley just up the road from this church. The original structure was long gone, but when they bought our property, there had been gas storage tanks by the road, leading me to believe there was a gas station there at one time.

I grew up a map nut in the 50’s and 60’s and even then Sibley, Dakota, Hatley, and Drayton were just spots on the map and the “towns” were gone. Doles and Oakfield were populated and Warwick even had a pool room. I have this vague notion that I remember there being a pharmacy with a soda fountain in Arabi but that may be a delusion. I do remember getting my “Sabin polio vaccine” at the old Arabi school long gone.

Fred, I think the old Arabi High School in now the Baptist Church. It was a few years ago because my aunt’s funeral was preached in that building. She and two of her sisters including my mother are buried in the Arabi cemetary.
