Florida Cooter, Irwin County

Florida Cooters (Pseudemys floridana) are quite common in South Georgia. Though often called “Box Turtles” they are a very different species, much larger and more often seen.

Yes, we had them in Georgia, too. My daddy called them Gopher Turtles. My little sister would stand on the back of one while it kept on walking. We lived in an established neighborhood, and there was a small creek down from our house, and a pond nearby, with a small area of woods. They were surely living in the area of the creek, but would wander into our yard at times. It was always exciting to see them. A few wild pigs were known to pass through the yard, also. Thanks for the pics.
