One of two Little Rivers in Georgia (the other is a tributary of the Etowah, in North Georgia), this river isn’t widely known beyond the immediate area. It’s collectively part of the Willacoochee-Withlacoochee-Alapaha-Little watershed that drains much of Southwest Georgia. A coalition devoted to protecting these rivers has been formed, as pollution from widespread chemical farming is an immediate concern to their health.
There are another two Little Rivers in Georgia. One flows between Wilkes and Lincoln Counties to the north, and McDuffie & Columbia County, to the south, before joining the Savannah River as part of Clarks Hill Reservoir. Then, in Columbia County, downstream from the Clarks Hill Dam, there is another Little River, where the Savannah River splits for a couple or miles or so. Then, just to add in some extra potential for confusion, there is yet another Little River in South Carolina, also joining the Savannah River in Clarks Hill Reservoir. Needless to say, one has to be very specific if you’re mentioning a Little River as part of the Savannah River watershed.
