Salem Primitive Baptist Church, 1859, Adel

A marker placed on the church by the John Howell, Sr. Chapter of the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century notes that this is the oldest church in Cook County. Constituted in July 1859, it was known for many years as the Lime Sink Church, for the mysterious lake located adjacent to the property and historically used by the congregation for baptisms. The so-called lime sink is a mystery because its source is unknown and analysis has never found any lime at the site.

My dad was blocked in the road by two hysterical boys one morning ,at that site who said their friend was underwater. The water is dark. The boys pointed in opposite directions. My dad could do nothing except call police. And search for movement – They arrived and divers searched for several hours before retrieval. Their mother wept on the bank the entire time till recovered as she came up to the site within the hour. I have tried to learn about the family but have been unsuccessful – so tragic.

I went to this church as a child, and have lived in Adel all my life. I too remember the telling of this story. My boss is one of the divers that actually found the boys body. So sad.

    Born and raised in adel.

Frequented the pond behind the church, which is a small park that lovely ducks would congregate. Had a huge cemetery East of it.

    Very tranquil place. Miss it.
