McDonald Farm Tenant House, Wayne County

It’s hard to miss this shotgun house with the Western Union sign. Sherri Johnson Sutton writes: The house and property to the left and across the street from the house was the McDonald farm (Danny McDonald was the son). In 1973, my Dad purchased the neighboring farm. There was actually a young couple with a baby living in it when we first moved to the farm. I remember taking food and diapers to them when I was a child.

I lived across the road from this structure for 15 years and was a good friend of its owner, Danny McDonald(deceased). There is another identical tenant house on the farm just down the road next to his residence. Danny told me they once had a Russian man and his wife living in this one. The man was a heavy drinker and one night his wife had had enough and killed him with a shotgun.

I grew up in Wayne County, and I’ve traveled Holmesville Rd 1000 times. I don’t remember seeing this old building. A lot of the land out that way is or used to be owned by the Harris family. My aunt was a Harris, but she’s gone now. She probably would have known who owned it, and what it was used for. Brings back memories.

The owner, Danny McDonald, found that sign and nailed it over the broken window sometime in the mid 2000’s.
