Woodville, Georgia

Woodville was incorporated in 1830. There were once two banks, a post office, a general store, pharmacy, cafe, dentist, and doctor’s office. The building at left was the general store and is just one of two remaining structures from its heyday.

Two of the most beautiful buildings anywhere were missed, when you were in Woodville taking pictures. The Woodville School, The Woodville Baptist Church, the Parsonage behind the church, and the cemetery behind the church are ALL on the National Register of Historic Places. The Church and School were both built in the nineteenth century. The inside of the church is amazing, as it has a cove ceiling, all in tongue and groove pine with huge beams and there are curved pews with slanted aisles. The School is a two story brick building with four huge white columns, and has an auditorium with a balcony and once had a huge skylight, which was closed due to roof leaks. There is a double staircase, and the auditorium stage has the original oil hand painted roll up curtain, with advertisements on it, and one dated by the faculty of the school as 1932. There is a gorgeous hand painted oil backdrop curtain of a gorgeous mountain scene. The hallways are line with wooden open lockers which have small boxes at the top with screen doors to hold the students’ lunches. Hooks in the open lockers would hold the students’ coats. There are a few of the original student desks, hand carved by the boys’ pocket knives they carried in their pockets. There is one pot bellied stove and an old oil heater, which were used. The building is now owned and used by the Woodville Baptist Church as a fellowship hall and for special events, such as family reunions and showers for brides and expectant mothers. The Parsonage was built by the CCC after WWII to serve as a Home Demonstration Building, which it did, and after abandoned as one, it became the Parsonage. The Cemetery is adjacent to the Woodville Baptist Church Cemetery (Hickory Street).

There are also, many beautiful old homes on East Peachtree Avenue, the street which has the church and school.

True gems were truly missed when photos were taken in Woodville.

Paula, I’ll get them this fall. I travel all over Georgia and often miss the best places. I looked at Google Earth and that school is amazing! And the church. When it gets cooler, I’ll be back. Thanks for the tip. And please, know that I don’t overlook these places on purpose.
