The Buccaneer Club, McIntosh County

Since first opening in 1956, the Buccaneer Club was a venerable institution on the coast, especially among locals. Originally a members-only establishment, it was known for its huge platters, brimming with all variety of local and exotic seafood. I photographed it in 2011, not long after a complete remodel or rebuild. According to recent reviews on sites like Trip Advisor and Expedia, the restaurant, located on the Sapelo River near the Belleville community, closed earlier this year.

joined the Club in 1977. Ate here several times. Even waited for the fishing boat to come up the Sapalo River to bring the seafood. I have never eaten better, fresher seafood in my life anywhere in the world. The old club cost a dollar , $1.00, to join. Rustic and friendly. Returned during the 1980s several times after attending the Fla. vs Ga. Football game in Jax. What a great life memory. I was certainly out of the way, alone on a dirt road. Ahhhhhhh

Went there several times while my ex husband was stationed at Fort Stewart in1968. They had the best seafood around & very generous helpings.

I remember the Buccaneer Club since 1976. I remember the old Buccaneer Club when McIntosh Co. was truly rural

My father was Cecil Kinsey. He worked and tended bar for Ms. Minnie Clelland. Anyone that remembers the original club or someone that does, feel free to contact me on my email

parmaster06@yahoo.com– probably not many still alive that remember all the animals that were in-the back of the club. I’m 77 now and have many fond memories of that place. I loved to fish off the dock. Thanks for listening. My name is Johnny Kinsey. Would love if anyone has any old pictures of the original place. Thanks.
