Central Hallway Farmhouse, Washington County

This perfect example of Georgia’s most common house type is like countless others that later added a wing for use as a kitchen or bedroom. I’ve said many times that these houses weren’t fancy, but they were built better than most houses of today.

I have occasionally come across an old deserted house like this in my travels around the state, that leaned a bit and looked like it was about to fall over. But when I’ve gently put my hands on it and pushed a bit, just to see how loose it really was, they never budged. Don’t know if they were put together with wooden pegs that still were firm, or nails that rusted in place and added strength. Built to last, and they have. Usually the tin roof rusted out before the walls gave out.
