Double Shotgun House, Long County

“Double shotgun” refers to a gable front house with two residences divided by a central wall. They were sometimes modified after tenant usage into single-family dwellings. It’s considered one of the rarest vernacular forms today.

    A “country duplex!”

My mom, younger brothers and I lived in a neighborhood of brick duplexes similar to this, from 1968–1972, on Savannah’s southside. It had a large central green park-like area (no amenities, mostly clotheslines behind the duplexes) that we all played ball in, safely away from streets and traffic. A bus line was next door. Basic accommodations, but a good place to live at the time.

The entire neighborhood was bulldozed, several years later, unfortunately, to make way for a group of medical office buildings, when a similar neighborhood across the street was also bulldozed, to make room for the new Candler Hospital complex. It was a good location for the hospital, but bad for the large number of displaced residents who lost affordable housing, which was never replaced.

There are a couple on Auburn Ave in Atlanta in the MLK Jr National Historic district. They were built in 1907.
