As best I can determine, St. James AME Church is a historic Freedmen’s congregation. While the present-day address is Fleming, it’s often associated with the nearby Freedman’s Grove community.

Coming from Hinesville on US 84 East, turn north onto GA 196. When you see the Fleming Shortcut convenience store on the left, along with the adjacent fruit stand next door, turn right onto Freedman Grove Road. St. James is a mile or two east of that intersection, on the left. It’s the only church on that road.
If you keep going east on Freedman Grove Road for another couple of miles, you will run into US 17. Turn left to go to Richmond Hill & Savannah; turn right (by the Dollar General) and you will come back to US 84 in Midway. I-95 is 5-7 miles to the left; Hinesville is a dozen miles to the right; Brunswick & Darien are straight ahead.

The comment above has been misidentified. I have no idea who the sender is that is listed, but it was not me. I live just down the road from St. James, on the eastern side of US 17 (Midway GA). Rafe Semmes
This church is actually on Freedman Grove Road, just off US Highway 17 South, about two miles north of Midway, in the middle of the Freedman Grove community. It is still an active church and a vibrant part of the community.
Fleming Loop Road is not far away, off of GA Highway 196, (which connects US 84 South to Hinesville with US 17 North to Richmond Hill), where the tiny Fleming community Post Office was located. I believe that little facility was closed several years ago, when the part-time woman postmistress was sadly killed by a young kid in a robbery attempt gone wrong.
