Yellow Bluff Company Store, Circa 1924, Liberty County

The Yellow Bluff Fishing Camp’s iconic company store survives despite being surrounded by modern development. Such structures were once common at fishing camps throughout Coastal Georgia but nearly all of them have disappeared today, due largely to changing land use. The Yellow Bluff Company established the fishing camp here in 1923 and the store was operating within the first year.

Fishing Camp, Ogeechee River

This private fishing camp is one of a few that still remain on the Ogeechee River.

I hope these sorts of places survive well into the future, but with increasing pollution on our rivers, it seems a challenge.

Just downstream from this camp, illegal chemical discharges at King America Finishing led to the largest fish kill in Georgia history in May 2011, essentially sanctioned by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.

Altamaha Regional Park, Everett

General Store

The Altamaha Regional Park began as a fish camp and has grown into a public facility that is well-known to area sportsmen, offering a general store, dock, and campsites and rental cabins.

Several of the older cabins remain on the property, as well as mobile homes.

The South Altamaha Flathead Association was a fishing club that met here at one time. I’m not sure they’re still active.

The fishing is good here, though.

I made this aerial photograph of the park on an assignment with veteran pilot Frank Lee and photographer Mike McCall.
