Cotton is one of my favorite places in Mitchell County. The land and farms are beautiful, but Marshall’s is hard to beat. It’s a store that’s also a post office. Historically, the smallest villages of Georgia often had country stores that served dual purposes as post offices, but this is very rare today.
I know the store very well. It was Whitson’s when I was growing up. I took piano lessons from Mrs. Maggie Williams, and while I was waiting to take my lesson, she would send me to the store to get her a Coke and a small bag of salted peanuts. Also, my Aunt Bill Beasley worked in the post office there. Later, after our parents passed and I would come to visit, I would go there for breakfast with my brother, Rodney Truluck. What wonderful memories we have of Hinsonton and Cotton Georgia.
I believe that this is the store that my great grandfather, Walter Davis, owned in Cotton GA in or around 1900. I have a picture of it with mules tied up at the side. I will be glad to share this photograph with you if interested. It is mounted on cardboard. My father & mother were from Meigs Ga. My grandfather farmed in Meigs as well as my uncle, T. O. Davis.

I had a lot of breakfasts there on my way to buy tobacco in Pelham
The store was closed the last time i went by it in 2017. Its a shame really, they sold good lunches there and homemade bread from a menonite family in the area.
Hopefully someone has reopened it, i love the looks of the area, and the store was centerpiece.
When my mom wanted 1 or 2 things from the store, this is where she sent me. I was only 14 so any excuse to drive was fine with me.
This was my Uncle Freddy & Aunt Faye Whitsons’ store. When I was 12, I helped my cousin , Fran put the mail in the boxes. Spent all of time there & lots of good memories.
I remember Freddy. He was about 13 last time I saw him, in the early sixties. His mom and dad ran the store back then.
I remember Mrs Faye. When we stayed with my grandparents every summer. We would walk to the store. Then to my uncle Wayne Burnum. My grandparents were James and Mary Feagin.
Such an amazing place to call home! I would raise my children no where else… they are loving the country life! I pray that God protects what we have worked so hard to pass down from generation to generation, the importance of the great outdoors, hard work, honor, and survival.
Hal Marshall is the current owner. He is my uncle and I actually worked in this store every weekend for the past 7 years. It’s a close community that tends to stick together.
THIS IS HOME. I REMEMBER VISITING THIS STORE FOR LUNCH WHEN I WORKED IN THE TOBACCO FIELDS IN THE AREA IN THE LATE 1970S AND EARLY 1980S. THE WHITSON’S OWNED IT THEN. I AM TOLD THAT IT IS NOW OWNED BY THE BROTHER OF ONE OF MY CLASS MATES, JENNY MARSHALL.
i have actually been to this store when i was a child. i have cousin who used to live maybe 1500- 2000 yards from this store on a dirtroad. they just dont make like this anymore and it’s really sad/

I build/carve replicas of old buildings out of wood. They are 3d looking wall-hangings. One that I built from here in Texas looks like this Marshall’s Corner Store. I’d like to pass on a photo or two If I can.
