Single-Pen Log Farmhouse, Wayne County

Detail of window and chimney. Note the saw notch, exposed due to the bowing of the house.

This is an early vernacular log house, among the oldest I’ve found in Wayne County. it’s an outstanding, if compromised, example of the form.

Hearth

This vernacular Neoclassical hearth is one of the finest I’ve found in a utilitarian dwelling. It is quite elaborate for such a simple structure.

Houses of this type are among our most endangered forms, and this one is no exception.
