The Still was a landmark to travelers on U. S. Highway 301 for many years, advertised by numerous billboards between Glennville and Ludowici. It sold Claxton Fruit Cakes, Pecan Candies, and all sorts of Georgia goodies.
Update: As of 2024, this structure is no longer standing.

Now I’m a proud owner of one of the historic landmark on 301 in Tattnall County GA The Still !
I purchased land around still about four years back and finally got The Still Building last summer. I have several plans to bring life back to The Still on 301 South. As of now my son is Aadam Malek (5 years old, kindergarten student) using as a storage unit for his Recycling business. He received an award from The Greater Tattnall County Chamber Of Commerce for Entrepreneur of the year !
I stopped here on the way to Florida in 1982—-lots of pecans, chocolates, and peanut brittle—–looked like it had seen better days but was still in business. Wish there was a picture of it when it was in its heyday.
This is all one of the reasons I wanted very much to rent a mini van and take the 301 (starting in Delaware) and try to trace our tracks down to Florida, just like the 1960’s. I was researching all of this back in spring of 2007. I get laughed at for thinking about this, but would really love to do it still.
Once again my parents and I drove to Florida in the summers of 1967, 68 and 69 and we took the US 301 nearly all the way into Florida. From there we got on I-95 and went to Miami/Fort Lauderdale. I am sure i remember this building.
I’m with you, Erbie! Love that old roadside signage..
I’d love to see some photos of those old billboards advertising The Still or Claxton Fruit Cake, but I suppose few folks thought back then to preserve something most thought of more as a blight on the landscape.
