Richard J. Reynolds, Jr., commissioned this facility, which also included stables, to produce milk and dairy products for his Sapelo Island visits. The U-shaped structure was modern for its time and included steam heat, hot and cold running water, a tiled milk laboratory, a darkroom, and even a small theater.

The facility has long housed the University of Georgia Marine Institute and has been used for scientific pursuits since 1954.
