HELLO”’ My name is MARY ALICE HUNT-JONES. OCONEE IS MY HOMETOWN. I WAS BORN IN THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 19TH 1950. MY FAMILY IS FROM OCONEE. I WILL ALWAYS LOVE MY HOMETOWN. I LOVE THE PEOPLE THERE. I LIVED THERE UNTIL I WAS 11YEARS OLD MY MOTHER MOVED MY BROTHER AND ME TO MIAMI FLORIDA IN 1961. OUR HOME CHURCH IS STILL THERE. AS A CHILD MR. LYLOD CURRY STORE USE TO SIT AT A CORNER USE TO LOVE GO TO HIS STORE. HE USE TO HAVE THOSE BIG PENNY WHEEL COOKIES IN A CONTAINER I LOVED HIS STORE. THEN UP TOWN WHERE THAT OTHER STORE SAT WITH THE BROKEN BENCHES, I SAT ON ONE OF THOSE BENCHES DRINKING MY ORANGE SODA, THAT IS A BEAUTIFUL PICTURE BRINGS BACK MEMORIES. MY COUSINS WERE THERE ALSO..EVERY CHANCE I GET WHEN COMING TO OCONEE I AND MY MOTHER THEN NOW SHE IS 89 YEARS OLD.. AND NOW I AM 68 YEARS OLD AND FULL LIFE I REALLY LOVE THAT PICTURE. IT BROUGHT JOY TO MY HEART. THANK YOU . THAT WOULD BE A WONDERFUL IF THE CURRY FAMILY WILL REVIVE THAT STORE.
My father’s family was from Oconee. Samuel Thomas McAfee Jr. Spent many a Sunday afternoon there and several weeks in the summer as a child. My son Clinton McAfee Gledhill tried to re-open the only store in town in the mid 2000’s and his father tried to get the community interested in restoring some of the other old buildings. They were not interested and did not support the store. It was eventually closed for good. So sad.
That is so sad, Cheryl, but unfortunately, not an uncommon issue people encounter in our smallest towns. It’s incomprehensible to me.

I have seen this old house many times and I always wonder what stories it could tell. I’ll bet there are many and they would be most interesting.
