Winged-Gable Farmhouse, Candler County

An abandoned farm house with a rusty metal roof and wooden siding, featuring a large porch supported by white pillars, overgrown grass, and a clear blue sky in the background.

At the end of my day with Cal Avery we found this old farmhouse, a central hallway form with an added wing. It was a most productive trip and Cal was the best guide, covering more territory in a few hours than I often cover in a day. This is a bit “fancier” than the average vernacular farmhouse, and though abandoned, it could still be saved. Never take these old places for granted. They’re often gone in the blink of an eye.

Do you have a photo of A.T. Fuller’s former home? It was a mansion built to look like a plantation house. Ocilla, Ga

I agree, Kim. So many places like this are saveable but they often get tied up in probate and/or the owners just won’t sell or rent-to-own them to those interested. I don’t know the story of this particular house, but I’ve seen so many of them lost to the elements. A real shame.

I have no photos of any houses that my grandparents, etc. lived in so I often imagine that maybe one of these houses was one that my family might have lived in. I also try to imagine how they looked painted with people coming in and out of the doors and the normal sounds of life. This particular house looks like a Butler Brown print that I have. Thanks for doing this!

No words can aptly describe this house which was once full of life, hope and promise. Children playing, dogs on the porch, Mom doing her daily chores, Dad in the field, busy with life. The stories that could be told are endless.
