Love those old Chinaberry trees. To me they are iconic and says “South Georgia” loudly and clearly. What young kid that grew up in the Wiregrass flat lands of Georgia didn’t entertain themselves with a Chinaberry berry fight? When the cousins came to see us, we would collect pockets full of the green berries and wage battle with each other. It was lots of fun.
The tree has character but its wood is soft and decays rather quickly. The hard green berries soon turn to yellow when ripe. They are poisonous. Chinaberry trees belong to the Mahogany family and has dark wood which is poor in quality. The tree is native to Asia and came to the U.S. in the 1800s. South Georgia would not be “South Georgia” without Chinaberry trees.
