Fort Screven is where my Dad joined the U.S. Army in 1935 as a Private 1st class with the 8th Infantry Division, which became an integral part of the 4th Infantry Division (4th I.D., The “Mighty Fourth” in 1940.) He participated in the Carolina Maneuvers, thus preparing him for combat in the Pacific Theater with the 4th I.D. Recon Bn for the Philippine Liberation from the Japanese. Because it was war time, he quickly made NCO rank. While the rest of the 4th I.D. went to Utah Beach, he not only had to deal with the enemy, he contracted malaria, but that didn’t slow him down. As a matter of fact, he made M/SGT and became a Tank Leader with the U.S. Constabulary in Germany and Austria after the war.
