Roberson Store, Circa 1925, Milledgeville

This is best remembered as James Roberson’s store, but it was owned by the Ennis family before that. Thanks to Sara Smith Brantley for sharing it with the Milledgeville Memories Facebook group; folks there quickly identified it. Kim Roberson Hornsby writes: This was my uncle’s store…He sold general supplies mostly groceries with those ladders that slid along the shelves. We loved going there as children and playing on those ladders. He had an ice cream box inside and candy treats he would give us when we visited. My grandmother lived across the street in the house with the brick steps. She had six children all born and raised in a two story house that is gone now that was up the little lane beside the house with the steps.

McDade’s Grocery was located on Vinson Hwy, across from the State Hospital ball field. As a youngster, I watched baseball games and later as a teenager, I played on a team that performed on the hospital ball field. Great memories! CW Brown, Maryville, TN.

This was my uncle’s store. It is on the corner of Allen Memorial and Irwinton rd at the caution light. Never had a restaurant in it and was never the IGA. Kim, I was well acquainted with your dad. As pastor of a Florida church, I invited him to preach a revival for me and we enjoyed a great week. He preached and even sang a solo one night. I recall the sermon title: Dove in the Dust! Years later, when I led a revival at my home church Hardwick Baptist, your dad was present and invited a group to his house, where he proudly exhibited his exquisite antiques. As a youngster attending meetings, I recall when your parents often sang a duet. They were very good. You have an outstanding legacy! CW Brown, Maryville, TN.

My grandparents ran their Home Accents store in this building from about 1985 until around 2010. If you have any questions I would love to help!

I worked for three years at James Roberson’s store after school and during the summer while a student at Midway School. Years 1954-57. I really enjoyed the experience, including the money that I made. My dad William Brown was a good friend of James. My family traded there also. Charles Brown.
