Crescent Hill Baptist Church, 1871, Sautee-Nacoochee

This church was built by Captain James Nichols as Nacoochee Presbyterian, soon after he arrived in the valley and built West End. Freedmen were welcomed as early members. It served the Presbyterians until moving to Nacoochee Institute in Sautee in 1903. It is one of the most visually appealing churches in the area and remains an active congregation.

Has this little church been renovated in recent years? My husband and I were there many years ago and my memory of it was a truly little country church with personal touches if throw pillows on the old timey looking pews, with an air of days gone by. I remember at the altar a collection plate was setting there (with money in it) and we added to it, amazed that it had not been stolen. It was such a sweet little church. It just looks totally updated in these pictures.

I understand that there are some Minish Family Members honored here on Memorial Stones in the Cemetery and even on Church Benches. Any information of these from others or even the Congregation that attends today. I am Connie Minish & live in Northeast Ga

That is a beautiful church. It is so odd that just yesterday I was reading about Captain James Hall Nichols. I was reading on genealogy sites about his wife Kate Latimer, a relative in my family tree. Then I read about him – he apparently was well-loved. But the end of his life was sad and bleak. I am glad to see the lovely little church, it seems to reflect his generous and kind nature.
