Loh’s Cafe Sidewalk Tile, Macon

Sidewalk tiles were once commonly used to advertise businesses, especially during the 1920s and 1930s, and were often seen in Art Deco environments. I photographed this one in downtown Macon in 2009. I have no idea if the sign remains nor have I been able to locate anything about the business.

Neil Joiner shared, from an article by Ed Grisamore, that the business first opened as the Crystal Cafe, in 1892, was later Loh’s, and after that, Jeneane’s Cafe. The building was reportedly the first in Macon to have electric light.

I would love it if you published a list of you’re favorite places to eat in GA. My wife and I love to ramble the backroads (we met you a a gallery opening many years ago) and one thing we enjoy most is small diners.

    What do you think?

I believe the tiles you photographed with Loh’s Cafe in Macon, Ga., is the family of Lawrence (Bubba) Loh. I have lived in Macon since 1976. Bubba Loh and his wife Alberta Loh were dear friends of my family. Bubba died on 2-6-13. His date of birth was 12-31-1922. His wife died some years before he did. They did not have children. Bubba graduated from Mercer Univ. In Macon, Ga. He was an SAE in college. Bubba and Alberta lived in Gray, Ga. Bubba was a devout Catholic. Bubba moved to Fla. after his wife died and we lost contact with him. My husband died 5-1-13 and my husband would be the one who would know all about the Loh’s Cafe information but alas, he isn’t with us anymore. You can look up Bubba’s obituary to get further information if you desire. They were a very sweet family. Good luck in finding out the history of Loh’s Cafe.
