Clear Creek Baptist Church, Wilkinson County

This congregation dates to circa 1846. Original members were Jesse B. Carroll, Wright Manning, Robert Ridley, Jr., Robert Ridley, Sr., Isaac Stinson, John Williams. There were also two schools in the Clear Creek District as late as 1917. I’m not able to locate a date for the “two-entrance” church building, but it’s probably a hundred years old at least.

Living in an over 100 year old church converted to a house in the seventies, I learned early on why there are two separate entrances – one for the men and the other for women and children. If you look closely at many of the old churches you have photographed you will find this at either the front or back door. In my old church the front door is a double-wide allowing families to enter together but when not escorted by a male at the back entrance there are two separate doors. Oh how far we have come, right?
