Post Office, Mystic

This shotgun style building originally served as a store, if I recall correctly, but has been the Mystic post office for many years. My father and I have bought stamps and sent mail from here on several occasions and it’s an experience in itself. It still has a tiny wood-paneled lobby with the old-fashioned mail boxes. And it’s only open for a couple of hours each day. Call me delusional, but I think it’s important for small communities to have services like this. Irwinville lost its post office a few years back and it’s still sorely missed.

Brian way back in the 50’s a cousin and l “worked” for the post master in Oakwood, GA when we spent nights at grandma’s house. Our favorite task was to hang the mailbag on the trackside mast to be grabbed by a passing train and then run along the track to find the bag thrown from the same train. Alas before long the postal inspector found about our “job” and our postal career abruptly ended LOL!

Flemington GA had a similar small PO, roughly halfway between the Lake George community, north of Midway, and Hinesville. It closed a dozen or so years ago after some young kid tried to rob the postmistress (who didn’t have much cash for him to grab), shot & killed her. Sad story. Nearest PO now is in Midway, a small one, but it’s usually busy, and in the main commercial strip off US 84, so probably much safer.

Post Offices like this were the lifeblood of many small rural communities around the country. Which is why people fight their closings (in the name of “efficiency”) so strongly.

Thank you for spotlighting this one.
