This house, which has been identified as the Allen Johnston House, was razed in the past few days. Debate continues as to the date and early ownership of the house, which local sources cite as circa 1858. While a few hand-hewn beams were visible in the ruins, most of the carpentry appears to be later than 1858. Even if the house as it appeared before demolition dated to the 1890s, as some have suggested, it would be one of the oldest in Ludowici.

The chimneys are all that remain.

Beautiful old house. The craftsmanship does not exist today. A house like that is a loss of history and so many memories. Probably came right down to money over preservation.
This is a tragedy and while common in the past when appreciation for historic preservation wasn’t as common there is less justification for this today. These historic structures can be saved, restored and put to alternative uses that can help revitalize and sustain local communities. The justifications for tearing them down are often pretty weak when examined critically.
This really makes me sad! What a beautiful old house!
I know. It’s just the county doesnt want to preserve it for it is poor 🙁
