Shotgun Store Ruins, Morris

An old, abandoned wooden store leaning to one side, surrounded by trees and overgrown vegetation.

This shotgun form store or office building is located next door to the larger general store building. One of two extant commercial structures in Morris, it is near collapse.

What an interesting picture! This was probably a vital part of that small community when it was first erected, however many years ago. I imagine its customers mostly arrived on foot, horse, or mule. I wonder what its most popular sellers were?

I have seen old buildings like this with slight leans to them, from time to time, across our state and others adjacent, that look so fragile one imagines you could sneeze and they would fall down! I have even tentatively pushed on one or two — but have been surprised to find they were much sturdier than they looked. Well-built, for their time — in the days before “power tools” made building much easier, and faster.

Buildings like this serve as time-markers: They served a purpose for their time, and now things have improved so much we don’t recognize how important they were to their communities. This might have been an “early convenience store” — without electricity or gas pumps, cigarettes or beer,

Thank you for documenting them. “Lest we forget.”
