Gable Front Cottage, Liberty County

An abandoned house surrounded by overgrown grass and trees, featuring a porch with white columns and peeling paint.

This utilitarian cottage has always been a favorite of mine. I never stopped to photograph because there was always an old car parked on the side and it wasn’t a convenient stop on the highway. I’ve passed it hundreds of times and always wanted to document it. I finally did a few weeks ago. It’s located between Flemington and McIntosh (the settlement in Liberty, not the county to the south).

My husband and I live in Hinesville for the past 5 years. We love learning about the area and pass by this house and others on this highway that we wonder who built them and about their lives and descendants.
This is the quintessential house style that so many have called home all over the US but, in the South, it was often built on stone or wood stilts. It provided shelter and memories made by so many families. Communities would do well if they could keep some of these from falling into disrepair. Its of major historical value to show how our ancestors lived especially the everyday Citizen.

Glad you documented this one, Brian. It seems to have all one would need in a house. The basics, but stylish in its symmetry.
