Bank of Surrency, 1911, Appling County

The Bank of Surrency building was built as a branch of the Baxley Banking Company. When the bank closed in 1922, the building was sold to F. D. & J. M. Kennedy. It served as the post office from 1926-1950 and  is the only remaining historic commercial building in what was once a thriving community.  Surrency was originally settled in the 1850s by Allen Powell Surrency but was known for many years simply by its railroad station designation (No. 6). By the time it was oficially renamed in honor of its found in 1904, Surrency was a boomtown, known as the “Crosstie Capital of the World”.
