Though this is known today as the Dent House, Bill Huggins writes: My Grandfather built the house circa 1897. Seven of his children were born in this house, including my father in 1904. The present owner, responsible for the restoration, has also written to say: The builder was J.L. Huggins – he built this house, the opera house and the old hotel that is now used for office space and some community functions in Hawkinsville. From what I can gather he sold the house in about 1910 and moved to Atlanta. With all the bad news I’ve had lately about houses being lost, it’s nice to see a place like this restored to its former glory. It was apparently in bad condition for many years, as local children called it “The Spook House”.
Re-reading the posts… my Grandmother Suzanne Dent was born in 1910 in Savannah. So it is possible she did not live there for long. My great aunt was the youngest Dr. Sara Dent, but think she was born in Union SC.
Hi: I know this is an old post, but I think my Grandmonth Suzanne Dent may have grown up here. They eventually loved to SC. I’m going to be in Savannah in October and curious if this house still stands? If someone has any specific info if Suzanne did live here love to know. Trying to figure out.
I grew up next door to this house and I remember Mrs. Dent very well who lived there .
I grew up in that neighborhood in the 1960s and never heard it referred to as a “Spook House.” At that time, it was owned by a woman who operated a kindergarten in the house and yard.
My Grandfather bullt the house circa 1897. Seven of his children were born in this house, including my father in 1904. I visited the house several times during restoration and it’s a thing of beauty. The workmanship is unbelievable and impossible to duplicate today. Bill Huggins, Albany GA
My extended family lives in Hawkinsville, and when I visited as a kid during the summers this house was in disrepair. My cousin and I called it “The Spook House” because it looked so creepy 🙂 So glad it has been restored and is not so spooky now. I recently wrote a post on my blog with more pictures of historic Hawkinsville homes and shared some of my memories of it as a special place. http://www.lostandfounddecor.com/hunts-finds/small-town-deep-south/
We recently had a visit from a relative of the original builder of the house. The builder was J.L. Huggins – he built this house, the opera house and the old hotel that is now used for office space and some community functions in Hawkinsville. From what I can gather he sold the house in about 1910 and moved to Atlanta.
The family sent me some pictures taken about 1900 showing the house and residents standing on the porch. The house has changed very little. Most significant change is that the side porch has been enclosed as a sunroom and originally the upstairs turrets were open porches. Some of the detail on the roof has gone missing but I will see what can be done to restore it to original.
Thanks – Katherine
Thanks for sharing, Katherine!

We recently purchased this property – locals call it the Dent House.
Thanks for the great picture
Thanks, Katherine. I will change the title to reflect this information. Would love to know more about the history of the house…lucky you for buying the place!
