Hey Brian I managed to get some pictures before they leveled this building.
Gus was my grandfather, Dirt floors and motor oil to keep the dirt down. There was a garage to the left and “Old man Joe” was the best mechanic in that neck of the woods. There was a bottle drink machine, long glass door 10 selections on the other side – Royal Crown Cola, Dr Pepper, Ne-His and Nugrape, Rootbeer! RC Cola and p-nunts on granddaddy’s llap behind the big glass case. You could smell the juicy fruit chewing gum even in all the oil and grease. He bought and sold used cars and had a junkyard out back. My brother Gus Walters III and I played in the old school buses. Best times ~ thanks for the memories. Tori Walters

If I am not mistaken, my Uncle Gus Walters owned and ran this shop way back in the 50’s – 60’s. It was on the main drag just before town heading West. I spent quite a few afternoons there when I was young drinking Ne-Hi’s and eating moon pies, watching the dirt daubers build their nests. Thank you for the picture.

I grew up on the far east side of Irwin County about three miles south of Hwy 32. I saw this place many times as a kid riding the school bus home in the ’70s. I recall my dad having to get the transmission replaced in his ’73 Chevy pickup – this is the place that did the work.

This is quite interesting to me. My son and I have actually made many photos of this place but I never expected to see it on the ‘net.

    Keep up the good work!
