    From what I understand, some Georgia judges are still in the practice of banishing criminals, and they’re often banished to Echols County. The idea is because it’s been ruled unconstitutional to banish a convict from the state outright, it’s okay to banish them from 158 of the 159 counties.

    I wonder if any of these ex-cons have actually gone to Echols — I think it’s just a cynical ploy to get them to leave the state. I also wonder how Echols County officials and residents feel about being used as the state’s own Devil’s Island so often.

    NO ITS THE ECHOLS COUNTY COURTHOUSE. ITS WAS BUILT IN 1955 WHILE I WAS ATTENDING SCHOOL THERE. I GRADUATED IN 1959.

    Echols is Georgia’s most rural county. I’ll be going to their Carrot Festival come May 12. A big day in Statenville!

    The best fishing I ever experienced was in Swanoochee Creek outside Statenville in the late 50’s and early 60’s…I also remember the crossroads in Statenville…If I remember correctly, 1 corner had Connie’s Grocery–One had the Red Rooster Dainer and the other was a restaurant/juke joint..
    Back then a lot of Florida traffic came thru there…
