Negro Industrial School, Mystic

Noting the deplorable physical condition of African-American schools in the late 1940s and early 1950s, many school boards throughout the South began building facilities such as this one. This was done in anticipation of or in response to Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka but ultimately only delayed desegregation.

Lord oh Lord do I have memories of that school. We had to walk to school everyday. I have so many stories I have told my grand kids about some of the things that happened there when we were just little kids. I had to be in or about the third grade when we were out for recess and someone seen a possum and I caught it because I wasn’t afraid. I had seen my grand father catch them and the teacher let me take it home to my grand father that was something at the time…

I was glad to see this photo. My gradparents, the Eldridge’s, live in the house next to this building and my grandpa uses it now for storage and a shop. When i was a little kid, and lived across the road from them, me and my cousins would play hide and seek inside and also loved to go through all the junk that was left behind, we also enjoyed racing wheelchairs that we found down the long hallway. My grandparents used to make it into a haunted house for Halloween as well. Last year when I was in school at ABAC me and my cousins would eat at my grandparents every Thursday and then take a walk around the property and school, always retelling the stories of the fun we had playin in it. Glad I found this!

I knew this had to be a school originally. I live less than a 1/4 mile behind it. Last occupant that I can see was Country Cable before they moved to Ocilla.
