St. George Elementary School, 1938

Built to replace the original St. George School [1910] which was destroyed by fire, St. George Elementary is the southernmost school in Georgia.

A tradition in my family has always said that the community where the Battens lived was called Battenville where many of the family are buried. I understand that years later the community of Battenville was renamed by a postmaster whose only son (George) had passed away. Later the property was purchased by a Fitzgerald but I can find no one who has any history before 1900 or has any information of any Battens. I do believe they were probably Primitive Baptist and possibly belonged to a church called Emmaus. I would appreciate any information I can find.
