Fowlstown General Store & Post Office, Circa 1878

I don’t know how long this has been abandoned, but there is a newer post office on Georgia Highway 309. Sam Griffin notes that retired Air Force sergeant Winston Pearson was probably the last owner/postmaster.

Update: As of 2022, this landmark is no longer standing, possibly a victim of Hurricane Michael in 2018.

Brian: Welcome to Decatur County! I haven’t been by the old Fowlstown Post Office in years. I suppose Winston Pearson was the last owner/postmaster of that emporium. He was a retired Air Force sergeant when he acquired the store. He still lives in Bainbridge, or, rather, out in Cyrene.

Really enjoy your work. It’s very important.

There is a vacant building in Bainbridge at the corner of N. Broad and Calhoun streets that might be of interest to you. Most recently it was Bainbridge Hardware, a venerable “hard iron” hardware store that occupied all three floors. It was originally Friedman’s tobacco warehouse, I think, and in the mid-1940s Jesse Gunn bought the building and opened Gunn Motors—a Chrysler-Plymouth-Dodge dealership—with a ramp up from the rear to take cars to the upper floors. For his grand opening, he had Ted Weems and his orchestra in the lobby—where I became addicted to Elmo Tanner, the whistler, and the beginning of an odyssey to learn to whistle “Heartaches.”. (I believe I succeeded.). Sad to see it deteriorating.

    Keep it up!
