Fire Destroys Jesup Business District

A fire which began at the Fair Haven Market in downtown Jesup last night (4 August 2014) is now contained, thanks to the efforts of the Jesup Fire Department and volunteers from surrounding counties.

Thankfully, no one was injured in this conflagration but nearly a quarter of the business district was destroyed.

Many of these structures were among the oldest in Jesup.

Most business owners are just glad no one was injured or worse, and they have vowed to rebuild.

Fires like this were once much more common but modern safety measures have made them less so.

The proximity of commercial structures still poses a danger, even with an efficient fire department.

I don’t believe arson is suspected at this time.

Brian — I enjoy you emails and am so sorry to hear about this. Is there any statewide effort to help Jesup rebuild?

Perhaps coincidence, but last month in mid-Mississippi a large portion of the old downtown burned. I don’t remember the name of the town, arson was not suspected, or not mentioned, but it makes me wonder. I hate the thought of losing these old buildings.
