Sardis Church is a beautiful example of early Georgia churches. Located South of Summerville and Lyerly on Georgia Hwy.114, I often pass this place on my way to my property in Alabama. In fact, I sometime elect to park at the church to eat my lunch so that I can enjoy the peace and ambiance of the Verdun countryside. The ridges, valleys, and fields of this area are like a scene from a travel magazine. Chattooga County is blessed to have this old church and another equally as scenic from the same time period prior to the Civil War. Located south of Menlo, on Georgia Highway 337, also leading into Cherokee County, Alabama an early Presbyterian church can be seen. Today it is used as a community church. It is interesting to note that some of these early churches were built before the Cherokees were expelled from Georgia and started their long journey to Oklahoma Indian Territory in 1838. (Jesse M. Back then, the women sat on one side of the church and the men sat on the other. They had their own entrances.
